To become a Christian you must believe that Jesus died for your sins and personally accept that. Sin is just another name for breaking God's laws and commandments, and the penalty for that is death. A Christian is someone who is saved from that penalty through faith in Jesus Christ. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotton Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16
